“Beating the Odds” follows the story of Gogata, an Eastern European from the village of Klisura. He has a good childhood and reasons to stay in his home country, but he knows he needs to look beyond his village to fulfill his ambitions. The turning point for him is a trip, 86 km away from his village, with his grandfather in a frigid February morning for an interview at an EducationUSA Center. This starts his journey from applying to U.S. colleges to getting accepted to one of the best tech schools in the country. Тhe stakes are high: he arrives on campus having just enough funds to cover his first semester. On top of that, he has to fight to overcome the challenges and anxiety of being in a place on the other side of the world where no one speaks his native language. The series unveil how adapts to a markedly different environment and makes friendships; reconnects with his cousin who he hasn’t seen in 15 years; connects two distant Rotary Clubs and is made welcome when he arrives in America; meets his U.S. Godmother, a Rotarian who offers to be helpful to him when he arrives, and gets the support that Rotarians can provide; finds a loving U.S. family; wins the sympathy of his co-workers and gets to know them outside of the office; and comes to consider his school’s campus his second home. Eventually, he beats the odds and completes his degree with his cousin and co-workers cheering for him in the crowd.
